The Silent City
Ilya Marren2026
Literary fiction
Writes cities as though they were relatives who stopped speaking.
Ilya Marren worked for nine years as a sound engineer for public radio before publishing anything, and it shows: his novels are built out of what people do instead of talking.
He writes in longhand, in a notebook per chapter, and has said in interview that he throws away the first notebook every time on principle. Three novels so far, each one set in a city that does not exist and is recognisable anyway.
Reader letters go to the house, unopened, and we pass them on. It is slower than a message form and it works better: Ilya answers letters.
